Vasari, in his well-known The Lives of the Most Excellent Italian Painters, and Architects from Cimabue to Our Times, speaking of Lorenzo Ghiberti, the first Renaissance artist who dared to write about himself in his Commentarii in the middle of the fifteenth century, made what we may call the first modern criticism of the autobiographical use of the first person.
