First published in 1967 in Moscow and rapidly translated into various languages, Bulgakov’s “twilight novel” represented at that time a public boom and later on it brought forth lots of interpretations (there were even talks about a “conflict of interpretations”) included in prefaces, articles, studies, chapters in monographs or even entire volumes. Limiting our research to the Romanian phenomenon concerning the approach to Bulgakov’s posthumous novel, we distinguish from the very beginning two different stages: the interpretation before and after the 1989 revolution.
