Excerpt:

Societas Scientiarum Branderburgica, afterwards known as Academy of Berlin, played a decisive role in the genesis of two major works Cantemir wrote in his mature age: Descriptio Moldaviae, a geographical, political and historical presentation of the Moldavian state, and Historia moldo-vlahica, an erudite work on the origins of the Romanians from Moldavia, Muntenia (id est Wallachia) and Transylvania. Considered as a unit with two inseparable facets, these writings put forward a horizontal, synchronic description of Moldavia and a vertical, diachronic one.
